Learning from others at the RYA Affiliated Clubs Conferences

The RYA Affiliated Clubs Conferences supported by Gallagher, were hosted across the country at the end of last year.  The conferences were the most popular yet, with a 48% increase in booking numbers and a 20% growth in the number of clubs represented since 2016.

The free regional conferences, which are held annually, featured keynote speakers and a suite of workshops from the RYA and partners.

With topics tailored to suit the strengths and opportunities of each individual RYA region, every year the conferences are the ideal setting for clubs to network, share knowledge and examples of best practice.

The theme for the 2018 conferences was ‘learning from others’.  Findings from the Futures Project, commissioned by British Marine and more recently featured by the RYA in the ‘Future of Sailing’ webinars were also a core theme across all of the regions.

Delegates were able to select workshops which varied from conference to conference.  From reaching new members with Facebook to RYA training recognition for your club, GDPR and other legal updates there was a wealth of knowledge and information for clubs to get their hands on.

The conferences were well received and the feedback from attendees has been excellent with delegates from the London and South East conference commenting: “I came away with plenty of new ideas for improving our club and feeling really charged and energised.”

The response from the Midlands conference was also extremely positive: “I learnt a lot and really enjoyed it.  It was helpful to get some reassurance of our current practices and to be reminded of all the RYA support available.”

RYA RDO Manager Guy Malpas says: “The RYA Affiliated Clubs Conferences provide a fantastic opportunity for clubs to network, share success stories and discuss the things that have a real impact – both in our clubs and in the sport.

“All of the workshops are tailored to address key areas highlighted in the Regional Plans and to best aid clubs approach local challenges and opportunities.  We were delighted to work with a host of external partners this year to deliver expert advice at each of the conferences and thank everyone that was involved in another successful year of events.

“The feedback has been extremely positive and really encouraging.  It’s always a pleasure to meet with so many people that are making a difference and we look forward to seeing everyone again at the 2019 conferences later this year.”
