Day #1 – Hempel Youth Worlds

The waiting is over and racing at the 2019 Hempel Youth Sailing World Championships commences today in Gdynia, Poland.

More than 400 sailors from 66 nations are racing at the 49th edition of the Hempel Youth Worlds and after two days of preparations and a stunning opening ceremony yesterday, it’s time to focus on the competition.

Sailors are racing across nine events with boats supplied by Ovington Boats (Boy’s and Girl’s 29er), Nautivela (Boy’s and Girl’s 420), Laser Performance / Maclaren (Boy’s and Girl’s Laser Radial) and Nacra Sailing (Mixed Nacra 15). The RS:X fleet are racing with their own equipment for 2019.

Over the first four days of competition, the 29er, Nacra 15 and RS:X fleets will sail three races a day, with the Laser Radial and 420 fleets scheduled to sail two each day. On Friday, the final day of competition, each fleet will sail a single race.

Competition on the opening day is scheduled to commence at 11:00 local time and it could be a tricky day of breeze on Gdansk Bay.

The morning breeze is currently from the north west to the west with 6-8 knots of wind speed. After midday the breeze is expected to decrease to 2-4 knots but after 14:00, it is expected to pick up to 5-7 knots.
